Snowmass Creek to the Crystal River
As the Roaring Fork River exits Snowmass Canyon the river enters a wide, low-gradient valley that characterizes most of this segment. Historically, the river meandered across this wide valley but with agricultural development came changes to the riparian vegetation which was broadly distributed across the floodplain. The rich soils of the floodplain were converted to agricultural fields and pastures, the channel was altered to accommodate agriculture, and stream diversions and dams became essential to development. All of these factors contributed to altering stream channel shape and function. Ongoing and current residential development in the riparian zone and along stream banks has continued the trend of altering riparian and stream habitat.
