Executive Summary Major challenges face the resources of the Roaring Fork Watershed, including increased development (both in the watershed and on the Front Range), recent drought, and the increasing pressures of extractive industries. The Water Committee of the Roaring Fork Watershed Collaborative has provided a forum for planners, scientists, elected officials, members of the public, and others to discuss these challenges and think about future direction. Now it is time to capture all of the technical data, analyses, and strategic planning in one place; it is time to develop a Roaring Fork Watershed Plan that the entire valley can support and implement.
The Roaring Fork Watershed Plan will be a comprehensive guidance document providing information on watershed issues, identifying and prioritizing projects to address those issues, and recommending means for project implementation. The Roaring Fork Watershed Plan will compile the information from past and ongoing studies in the Roaring Fork Watershed and identify gaps in our knowledge base. The plan will identify the socioeconomic benefits of a healthy watershed and the risks the valley faces if it fails to take action to protect its water resources. A Roaring Fork Watershed Plan offers a means by which all stakeholders (including all governmental entities) within the drainage can act on one holistic and agreed upon set of directions and recommendations.
